81 Auto Clinic

81 auto clinic

For Tami and Duane Johnson, 81 Auto Clinic started with a feeling many people know well: it was time for a change. Tami was, in her words, “Tired of punching a time clock for someone else. Plus the desire to raise our sons around a small town.”

That simple, honest answer says a lot about what would become 81 Auto Clinic. On November 7, 1988, they opened their doors along Highway 81 in Arlington and stepped into a new chapter — not just as mechanics and business owners, but as a family building a life and legacy in a small town they love. Thirty-seven years later, that decision still shapes their days, their relationships, and the way they serve every person who pulls into their lot.

Growing with the Times — and the Technology

When you’ve been in business as long as 81 Auto Clinic, you see a lot of change. Tami sums it up simply: “The biggest changes over the years has been the ever changing technology in the automotive world. You never stop learning.”

From carburetors and simple electrical systems to today’s computer-driven vehicles, every year brings something new to diagnose, update, or relearn. Instead of being intimidated by that, Tami and Duane leaned into it. They’ve kept up with training, tools, and technology, making sure Arlington has a shop that can handle both the old pickups that have seen a few decades of winters and the newer vehicles loaded with sensors and electronics.

But while the technology around them keeps changing, their approach hasn’t: learn, adapt, and take care of people the best way you know how.

More Than an Auto Shop

At its heart, 81 Auto Clinic is an automotive repair shop — but anyone who’s been there knows it’s more like a small-town service hub. As Tami explains, they provide: “Automotive service and repair. Lawn mower, small engine repair, and parts. Plus full service gas, the Rada knife line, and Tami’s children’s books.”

That list captures the variety of what they do:

  • Automotive Repair & Maintenance – Everything from routine maintenance to bigger repair jobs to keep vehicles safe and reliable.
  • Lawn Mower & Small Engine Repair – Mowers, small engines, and the parts to fix them, so customers can keep their yards and equipment running.
  • Chainsaw & Outdoor Equipment Support – Over the years they’ve become a go-to spot for outdoor power equipment help.
  • Full-Service Gas – Tami still comes out to the pump, offers full-service fueling, and checks in with customers. In a world of self-serve everything, that small gesture feels like a time capsule.
  • Rada Knives & Accessories – High-quality cutlery and kitchen tools, perfect for gifts or everyday use.
  • Children’s Books by Tami – Her own books line the shelves, a personal touch that reflects both her creativity and her connection to families in the area.

It all adds up to a place where you might come in for an oil change and find yourself leaving with a sharpened mower, a new knife for your kitchen, and a signed children’s book for a grandchild.

“The Last of the Dinosaurs”

If you ask Tami what makes 81 Auto Clinic different, she doesn’t talk about fancy equipment or big marketing plans. She says, “Offering services few others do anymore. We often refer to our selves as the last of the dinosaurs.”

That “dinosaur” identity is one they wear with pride. Full-service gas. Knowing customers by name. Fixing things instead of just replacing them. Taking the time to listen to what someone really needs, not just what’s on the ticket.

When people walk through the door or pull up to the pump, Tami wants “That they are more than just a number.” In a small town, your customers are also your neighbors, your kids’ teachers, your church family, or the person you’ll see in the bleachers on Friday night. 81 Auto Clinic treats them that way.

Quality, for Tami and Duane, is simple: do the job right, stand behind your work, and care. They focus on “doing this best we can,” even when that means long days, tough diagnostics, or squeezing in an urgent job so someone can get to work or make it to a medical appointment.

The Hard Parts — and the Best Parts

Running a small-town shop for nearly four decades isn’t easy. Tami is honest about that. When asked about the biggest challenge of owning a business, she says: “Long hours, and the increasing costs.”

The work doesn’t stop when the sign on the door flips to “Closed.” There are after-hours calls, parts to order, books to keep, and constant decisions about how to keep prices fair while everything from supplies to utilities goes up.

Yet when you ask her what’s most rewarding, the answer is just as clear: “The customers.”

It’s the familiar faces who have trusted 81 Auto Clinic for years. The families who bring their first car in for a checkup before sending a teen out on the road. The farmers who count on their pickups and equipment to keep things running. The folks who come in, sit for a bit, and leave knowing someone truly did their best for them.

Those relationships — built one oil change, one repair, one full-service gas stop at a time — are the heart of why 81 Auto Clinic is still here.

Giving Back to Arlington

For Tami and Duane, “community” isn’t something they talk about in a slogan; it’s woven into daily life. As Tami puts it, “We give back daily with the services we offer.”

But her involvement goes well beyond the shop. “Plus for several years Tami helped with the Arlington Christmas lining up vendors and cooking for it Plus she also helped put on the spring craft fairs that brought many people from other towns to shop Arlington.”

Those events don’t just happen on their own. They take hours of planning, phone calls, organizing, and showing up. Tami has spent years doing just that — helping create reasons for people to visit Arlington, support local businesses, and experience the kind of small-town charm that drew her and Duane here in the first place.

Advice for New Business Owners

Three-plus decades in business gives you a different perspective than a quick success story. Tami’s advice is simple and real: “Be prepared to put the hours in.”

There’s no shortcut around the early mornings, late nights, and constant problem-solving. But there is a deep satisfaction in building something steady and meaningful — a place that serves your community, supports your family, and becomes part of the town’s story.

Stop In and See Them

Whether you need automotive service, lawn mower or small engine repair, chainsaw help, full-service gas, a good Rada knife, or one of Tami’s children’s books, you’ll be welcomed as more than just a number.

As Tami says, if you want to know more about the business, the best way is simple: “Stop in and see us.”
