Prairie Posh Hatworks

Art Meets Western Style
Mal never set out to become a hat artist-she simply couldn’t separate two passions. “With my love for hats and passion for art I decided to put the two together,” she recalls. That decision launched Prairie Posh Hatworks in March 2023 and turned a creative experiment into a fast-growing business.
From Burn Marks to Masterpieces
Early days were messy: basic designs and “lots of holes burnt through different materials” while Mal searched for the right hat bodies. Through trial and error she discovered the blends that hold intricate, smooth lines. Vendor tables soon gave way to full-length displays, and this summer her free-hand creations filled booths at high-profile shows such as the Brookings Summer Arts Festival and South Dakota’s legendary Buffalo Round Up.
A Wall of Possibilities
Prairie Posh centers on ranch-style hats but now offers ball caps, trucker caps, visors, and, most recently, purses and jackets. Custom work is a hallmark: clients choose style and color, measurements are taken for a just-right fit, and Mal sketches concepts on request. Finished pieces range from wedding or senior-photo showstoppers to memorial hats honoring loved ones.
Why Free-Hand Matters
“In a market flooded with stencils and lasers, I feel I have more control when I draw every detail myself,” Mal says. That commitment to free-hand art, and to quality materials like vegan suede and wool felt, gives each hat a singular personality. Elastic interior bands keep every piece “in place without being tight,” and Mal’s open communication ensures clients stay informed throughout the process.
Challenges & Rewards
Finding target audiences has been the toughest hurdle. Social media, retail partners, and larger shows have broadened Prairie Posh’s reach, but the greatest reward comes when customers see photos of their finished hats and “fall in love with their piece.” The relationships forged along the way, “from small children to senators to musicians”, fuel Mal’s creativity.
Giving Back
Prairie Posh Hatworks routinely donates hats or sales proceeds to charities, veterans, and families facing cancer treatments. Community impact is woven into the brand’s fabric as tightly as any hatband.
Looking Ahead
Excitement is building for the 60th Anniversary Buffalo Round Up, where Prairie Posh may be featured on Travel South Dakota coverage-an opportunity to showcase both artistry and South Dakota pride.
Words for Fellow Entrepreneurs
“If I have any advice,” Mal reflects, “it would be to keep practicing and keep challenging yourself. None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the people in my life who help, encourage, and offer advice.”
